KKC’s founder, Robert F. Kahan, was born and raised on a Vernon farm. When he began his private practice in 1964, Vernon and the surrounding communities were experiencing substantial residential growth. As land development continued and expanded into commercial and industrial uses, KKC expanded its legal and technical staff to assist not only its farmer clients but also the land developers who came to the area to develop local properties.

KKC remains very active with the farm community through our representation of the local Farm Credit lending agency and as a member and advisor to the local Farm Bureau. However, our client base has grown to include local and national companies who seek to develop property and expand their business presence in our service area, where KKC offers the experience and resources necessary to assist in bringing about the most desirable result.

Farms and farm transactions are different and special in many respects. These transactions might include dealing with unusually complex multiple parcel property titles or financing that accommodates particular agricultural cycles. We also provide tax planning and conveyances of farm property from parents to children, which ensures the continuity of the family farm.

We were a client of KKC through a program set up by Legal Food Hub in which attorneys help food businesses, pro bono. As new farmers, the learning curve is steep and the legal issues can be overwhelming. We are so grateful for the professional help from KKC, in particular from attorney Bill Dakin. Not only did Bill answer all of our questions in depth but he also discussed other related issues that we were not aware of. He helped clear all our confusions and gave us invaluable suggestions going forward. Thank you!
